The rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide release of primitive hunters and weaver spiders, the Chilean Recluse spider Loxosceles laeta Nicolet (Araneae: Sicariidae) and the Chilean Tiger spider Scytodes globula Nicolet (Araneae: Scytodidae), are analyzed, and their relationship with body mass is studied. The results are compared with the metabolic data available for other spiders. A low metabolic rate is found both for these two species and other primitive hunters and weavers, such as spiders of the families Dysderidae and Plectreuridae. The metabolic rate of this group is lower than in nonprimitive spiders, such as the orb weavers (Araneae: Araneidae). The results reject the proposition of a general relationship for metabolic rate for all land arthropods (related to body mass) and agree with the hypothesis that metabolic rates are affected not only by sex, reproductive and developmental status, but also by ecology and life style, recognizing here, at least in the araneomorph spiders, a group having low metabolism, comprising the primitive hunters and weaver spiders, and another group comprising the higher metabolic rate web building spiders (e.g. orb weavers).  相似文献

Adsorption/desorption processes (sorption isotherms) of Naproxen in a sandy aquifer matrix sediment were investigated using batch tests to compare Naproxen sorption behavior at 15°C and 25°C. Both temperatures are representative of the aquifer media and environmental conditions. Adsorption was well described by linear isotherms with low sorption affinity to aquifer material (Kd of 0.4 μg kg?1) at both temperatures (15°C and 25°C). Desorption isotherm coefficients at 15°C and 25°C were 5.0 and 4.9, respectively. Naproxen hysteresis indices were between 9.98 and 10.8, indicating that a Naproxen fraction may be irreversibly fixed in the aquifer media, being higher at 25°C (10.88) compared to 15°C, showing a decreasing trend with increasing compound concentration at 15°C. The low sorption of Naproxen leads to potential leaching to groundwater if present in irrigation water, and its prevalence in an aquifer media when directly injected in wells for groundwater recharge.  相似文献

Most extant New World marsupials belong in the Didelphidae, which comprises ca. 110 currently recognized species of opossums. Didelphids are small mammals with their mean body mass, at species level, ranging from ca. 7 g to 2.2 kg. The largest species belong in a single clade, while substantial variation remains scattered across the remaining groups. We seek out to explore the details of this mass variation in an evolutionary framework. To this end, we first reconstructed the phylogeny of didelphids based on an extensive, although fragmentary sample of sequences from ten genes. We recovered a fully resolved, highly robust phylogeny that tested and confirmed most previously reported groupings, providing a simultaneous depiction of phylogenetic relationships for 81 % of currently recognized species and all relevant supra-specific clades. As much as 69 % of total body mass variation in didelphids was explained by this phylogenetic hypothesis. Mapped on it, mass variation evolved as much as 6.8 kg of total changes, starting from a reconstructed ancestral body mass range of 22–33 g. No single, family-wide pattern was evident; in fact, the dominant pattern for mass variation was that of increases in body mass along a few successive branches, or phyletic giantism, followed by apomorphic nanism, i.e., decreases localized in single terminal branches. Phyletic trends indicated the persistence of gradual, directional changes along considerable spans of geological time and show that substantial variation of interest resides in this and perhaps most groups of small mammals.  相似文献

The distribution of labeled RNA in the optic nerve of the rabbit was studied by quantitative ultrastructural autoradiography after the intraocular injection of [3H]uridine. The highest density of silver grains related to [3H]RNA (27–40 grains/100 µm2) was found in glial cell perikarya; a slightly lower density was present in the glial nuclei (19–20 grains/100 µm2). Axons (4–5 grains/100 µm2) and myelin (2–3 grains/100 µm2) had the lowest grain densities. 74–83% of all counted grains were located outside the axons. By comparing the grain density distribution over the axon with that expected in the case of an exclusive labeling of the surrounding myelin and glial cell processes, it was concluded that the axons contained a number of grains representing [3H]RNA significantly higher than that expected to scatter from myelin and glial processes. Most of these grains were concentrated at the periphery of the axon and were not related to axonal mitochondria.  相似文献

Background  

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are locations at which the genomic sequences of population members differ. Since these differences are known to follow patterns, disease association studies are facilitated by identifying SNPs that allow the unique identification of such patterns. Class III adenylyl cyclases usually possess six highly conserved catalytic residues. Deviations in these canonical amino acids are observed in several putative adenylyl cyclase genes as apparent in several bacterial genomes. This suggests that a variety of catalytic mechanisms may actually exist. The gene Rv0386 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis codes for an adenylyl cyclase catalytic domain fused to an AAA-ATPase and a helix-turn-helix DNA-binding domain. In Rv0386, the standard substrate, adenine-defining lysine-aspartate couple is replaced by glutamine-asparagine. The recombinant adenylyl cyclase domain was active with a V(max) of 8 nmol cAMP.mg(-1).min(-1). Unusual for adenylyl cyclases, Rv0386 displayed 20% guanylyl cyclase side-activity with GTP as a substrate. Mutation of the glutamine-asparagine pair either to alanine residues or to the canonical lysine-aspartate consensus abolished activity. This argues for a novel mechanism of substrate selection which depends on two non-canonical residues. Data from individual and coordinated point mutations suggest a model for purine definition based on an amide switch related to that previously identified in cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases.  相似文献
